How Auto Repair Pricing Actually Works
Most automotive repair shops bill using "Book Time" published by industry reference databases (Mitchell 1, ALLDATA, or Chilton). A book time is the estimated number of labor hours a specific repair takes for an experienced technician.
Shops charge their posted hourly rate multiplied by the book time, regardless of whether the technician takes 45 minutes or 2 hours. Knowing the true book time protects you from inflated labor billing.
